For Pride month I am making a series of glass fruit in the colors of LGBTQ+ flags. For the first one of this series I decided to make a trans flag pickle. Pickles are iconic in the transgender community because transgender women on spironolactone often crave salty foods. However, I’m a trans man and I also love pickles! So much so that I often make my own.
Despite the social and political backlash against our community, many trans people feel that our experience is a joyful one. We get to rediscover ourselves in a new light, outside of the restrictive expectations of society’s gender norms. I came out later in life, after many years living as a woman, and it was incredibly freeing to finally be able to live in a body that felt like it was mine.
I love that I get to live my life as a man. I love that I have the perspective gained from living as a woman. Being trans to me is a very special, sacred experience. So today, as every day, I will celebrate our trans joy!
