For the second piece in this series after lemon, I wanted to continue the theme of citrus fruit! Much like lemons, oranges trees are all over California, which was very exciting to me after growing up on the east coast. But I think oranges are a more accessible and familiar fruit. Most families buy a bag of oranges to throw in the fruit bowl regularly, or keep orange juice in the fridge. Oranges are our down-to-earth breakfast companions, so I wanted to keep the vibe of this piece more calm and familiar.
The orange slice in the foreground peaks every so slightly up through the orange of the sunrise in the background, surrounded by leaves which I based loosely on an orange tree. The fun shapes of the flat orange slices at the bottom mirror a couple eggs sitting on a plate for breakfast. The colors are very simple and limited – light blue, orange, yellow and green. For the foreground element I used a playful shape for the glass which is sort of halfway between a cocktail glass and a tumbler. Did someone add a little something extra to their orange juice for brunch? Whoโs to say?
